Why Choose An E-Collar

E-collars are controversial in the world of dog training collars. They are an electronic training tool, usually referred to as a remote dog training collar or shock collar. The dog collar itself consists of two parts, 1) a wireless remote control carried by the owner and 2) a wireless receiver that the dog wears close to their neck. E-collars can be used to reinforce commands your dog already knows or as a training device when paired with leash pressure and/or a harness. E-collars should never be used to replace basic obedience and leash training, but utilized as a tool that allows you to communicate better with your dog. This communication is carried out by physical signals or stimulation by the collar and provides feedback to teach dogs the difference between good and bad behavior. The electric stimulation provided is not a shock or zap, but more like a pulsating wave sensation. E-collars will have various settings from low to high levels of stimulation so you can control the intensity of sensation that your dog experiences.

Remote e-collars help you reinforce the behaviors you want from your dog, including staying away from garbage on the street or pulling on their leash. They also let you correct chasing, digging, and other unwanted behaviors. E-collars are not recommended for use in correcting unwanted barking and should not be confused with a bark collar. E-collars should also not be used to correct when a dog is licking surgery wounds; we recommend cones or Elizabethan collars for this reason!

With an e-collar, when you push a button on the handheld remote, your dog will receive some form stimulation, depending on the setting, from their electronic collar. The stimulation gets their attention and lets you communicate clearly and consistently with your dog. It is nice to know that they will listen when you talk to them!

For best results, you should always use the least amount of stimulation required to get the attention of your dog. A calm and consistent approach to training will always produce better long term results. It is highly recommended that aggressive dogs (or any dog, for that matter) be taken to a professional trainer for evaluation before e-collar use. There are many training techniques recommended by professional trainers. You know what is best for your pup, so it is important that you, as a first time user of an e-collar, take the time to study the proper training techniques. The initial introduction of the e-collar is crucial to the success of e-collar training, which is why we highly recommend working with a trainer and doing your own research before even considering using an e-collar.

Why You Shouldn't Use an E-Collar

E-collars used to be known as shock collars, though e-collar companies have changed their marketing over the years. The name is less harsh, but the collars are essentially the same. They are designed to have your dog generate negative associations with undesirable behaviors, so if the dog does the right thing they get a treat and if they do the wrong thing they get a shock.

According to anti-e-collar experts, the problem with this type of training is that the definition of "wrong behavior" is endless. So if you’re trying to train a dog to lay down using an e-collar, there are so many other “wrong” things they can do before they reach the desirable behavior. It can be confusing for them and the shock can increase anxiety in your dog.

Another issue with the e-collar is that dogs tend to generalize and don’t always realize the associations we want them to. Dogs can start to associate the pain or discomfort from the shock collar not with the bad behavior, but with the location or even the person present. When dogs associate pain with humans, it can increase their stress levels and/or cause them to act aggressively. Some dogs have to be re-trained merely to remove the anxiety caused by incorrect usage of an e-collar.

Due to these issues and others, we strongly recommend conducting your own research and consulting a professional before even considering using an e-collar.

The Benefits of Using an E-Collar

Many professionals argue e-collars are an effective training tool. They view the e-collar as just another way to communicate with your dog, like an extension of the leash. Another benefit of using an e-collar for dogs is the ability to act immediately when you’re correcting a behavior. Timing is key with dog training, whether you are correcting a behavior or providing a treat for positive reinforcement.

Many times it’s difficult to correct your dog the moment they’re acting out. Getting to your pup fast enough is important to understand their behavior is wrong. Remote e-collars are especially effective if you’re working on off leash training. They can also be the difference between life and death if your dog is in danger.

If e-collars are a training tool you want to consider, we recommend consulting or working with a professional dog trainer to incorporate them into your routine. It’s necessary to fully understand how and when it’s appropriate to use an e-collar. If misused, e-collars can cause more behavioral problems than they solve.

How To Choose An E-Collar

Whether your dog needs to stop digging in the backyard or work on their obedience commands, remote training collars with handheld remotes allow you to safely teach them better behavior.

The best e-collar for your pet depends on:

  • Your dog's size
  • Your dog's temperament
  • Collar features like range and tone option
